You can use the shifters you have if you run them in friction mode, and the derailleur will be fine either way. 7 speed indexed thumb shifters from that era are pretty expensive used, but Shimano makes "top mount" 7 speed and Rapidfire shifters that would work fine.

Thanks for that picture. It sounds like you're saying the 6 speed shifters won't index for 7 speeds, which I sort of expected. I'm a friction guy, so this is new territory for me.
