You don't have many options. Meyersdale is the last town of any size before the tunnel. Between Deal (trailhead) and Frostburg is nothing but rolling tableland, stream crossings, and the mountain.

And getting around Big Savage isn't an easy task. Are you prepared to hike a bike over the mountain?
I suggest either the road route that Mary Shaw's book describes, or contacting someone in Cumberland, Frostburg, or Meyersdale to shuttle you around the tunnel.
