Barrettscv is correct re. positioning. Motorpaced riding is typically done in such a position, as can be seen in the photo Superdex posted.

FWIW, for many years (my years included) motorpaced racing was almost exclusively the province of older, semi-retired riders, ex-pros, etc., as it didn't draw crowds (it's actually kind of boring to watch, after the initial spectacle has worn off) so didn't pay much, especially considering the additional dangers involved. So there's really nothing too special about respectable performances turned in by an older man. Reading through the list of world motorpacing champions will produce multiple 40-50 year old winners.
