They were an "also ran" compared to Nashbar until some time in the early nineties when they finally started to gain traction with the mail order crowd. By that time, of course, the `net had come along, and catapulted both their and Nashbar's business out of the "mail order to the truly dedicated bike geek" category, and turned them both into everybody's wholesale (almost) parts house.
