custom wheel build--which rims?

I'm building a disc cross bike to be my commuter/bad weather bike. I haven't purchased them yet but I'm going with xt 6-bolt hubs. I'm not sure about the rims. I've got a pair of mavic ma40s hanging in the garage. Yes they're vintage and they're 36h, but I had some on my first road bike and they lasted 18 years w/o any problems. Reading the other posts, many have said go with open4cd which is a successor to the ma40. So my question is this...use what I have or buy something else? I'll probably use 32-35mm width tires. I'm a small rider, about 5-7 130lbs, so I'm generally easy on equipment. . Weight is a moderate consideration and $ are probably more important these days.

Any obvious selections I'm overlooking? Or just personal preferences you have...
