If you can, I'd recommend a second wheelset (wheels and a cassette) so you can swap them at a moment's notice. Weather in NYC is unpredictable. I wouldn't know what to ride until I got up in the morning. Wheel swap takes 2 minutes, tire swap takes much longer plus pumping. Since you will be riding slowly without hitting any potholes at high speed you can get away with a cheap set of wheels from another bike or eBay.
For several years I only had one bike and two sets of wheels. The bike was a Giant Iguana, I had one set of slick tires for commuting and one set of knobbies for the fun riding.
