Depending on how long you're going to spend here in the area, there is also an organized ride on the C&O Canal (Sept 10-12, 2010), http://www.alz.org/nca/in_my_community_10403.asp, I believe it is spread over two days/184 miles, but as SpongeDad says, it is not suitable for road bikes and I believe the event requires some fundraising.
