While out riding this past weekend I found two bike trail issues of note:
The bike path on the west side of Calumet Ave. from Fisher St. to 45th St. is closed for reconstruction. It looks like some underground utility work was being done, and a freshly paved bike path will be restored. The posted detour is Columbia Ave. (about 2 blocks east).
The Munster portion of the Pennsy Greenway (northwest Indiana) is under construction with preliminary grading done from Calumet Avenue to Main Street (1.5 miles). The portion from Calumet Ave back to the IN-IL state line is supposed to be built this year also.
I'm hoping that Munster's northern part of new Pennsy Greenway trail will follow the railroad ROW all the way from the state line to Calumet, but I'm guessing they will divert to the Fisher St. bikeway and the Calumet Ave. bikeway and make the connection south of 45th Ave (at the north end of Centennial Park). The Fisher St. segment runs through some low spots that stay quite wet to the point of flooding easily, and cross 5 driveways and streets.
Progress, slow but sure.
