My theory is that there are two factors for safety - visibility and awareness.

I would say that the trick is then to make sure they PAY ATTENTION as they approach and pass.
Therefore you need to send the message "You need to pay attention to me" - hi vis yellow, flashing lights, and even an aggressive body posture is going to help.

Excellent points. It's one thing to be seen or noticed, but another thing entirely to remain on their radar.
I'm going to run an amber Dinotte in front in the flashing mode to help reduce the risk of getting cut off by oncoming drivers making left-hand turns.
