I rode my last chain/cassette combo for like 5000miles. Switched new chain, it worked fine. Switched cassette over to other bike with another new chain, it was fine. I think going forward I'll just ride a chain/cassette combo until it dies, then replace both.
I once had that mentality but soon realized that your shifting will suffer. I replace the chain at 0.75 wear, with the cheapest 10s chain I can find (currently the Sram 1070 from Performance).
