The Nuvi series GPS units are designed for cars. They will route themselves, so you do not need Google. They are stand alone devices...
Better yet, just get one of the Edge GPS units. I have the Edge 305 and it rules.

I can't plot a course on my Nuvi, either (mine is an older 200, not a 550)...Like Seagull says, they are auto-routing devices, not designed to do what you want.
