How's Mount Pleasant at rush-hour? (Toronto)

The most direct route for my commute to/from work is up Yonge (Church/Wellesley to Yonge/Eglington)

Going to work is fine in the mornings and the traffic usually isn't that bad, but coming home the past while has been a bit nuts and really making me not enjoy the commute.

If I have the time, I don't mind cutting across Broadway until the Don Valley Trails and taking that route home for a scenic detour, or now and then maybe entering in at the David Balfour park near St. Clair, and coming out near the end of Mt. Pleasant for the rest of the ride - but debating just cutting across to Mt. Pleasant and riding that back downtown - or is this just asking for more trouble than biking down Yonge street at 5:00pm?
