Another thing you may consider is taking the train to Pittsburgh and doing the GAP - C&O. I believe they have full luggage service in Pittsburgh too. That way you could go straight to Pitt and ride back to DC. It'll add 150 miles to the ride but the GAP riding is much smoother, from what I've heard. I attempted this ride (in reverse) last year but got stopped by horrific weather in early October. So, I may be interested to try it again...

The problem with a train to Pittsburgh is that it arrives at midnight.
But if you decide on this route and I am in town and I don't have to go to work the next day and there are only 2-3 people
. You are welcome to stay here. You can then take the Montour Trail to the GAP. I would be happy to act as tour guide down the trail or through the city (shorter).
