There's a couple of ways of doing the trail. An out and back from St. Charles to Sedalia on the Katy would probably be the easiest. The Bike Katy Trail website is extremely helpful with distances and finding places to stay. I'd suggest Lococo House in St. Charles (very nice people) and the Mumbrauer Gasthaus in Hermann (Betty is a hoot!).

For a really cool day trip, start in Alton, IL and ride the trail all the way to the Gateway Arch. The ride across Chain of Rocks Bridge is spectacular.
