I commute from Kenmore Square to Norwood, and like me, it appears you are a reverse commuter too. The joys of such IMO are that if you leave early enough, traffic is very light, and there is the possibility of taking a Commuter Rail home at night. My commute is 14 miles one way, and I do take the train home, but in the summer I follow a Century training schedule that has me ride up to 32 miles one way on a weekday.

When I go out west toward Waltham (usually on weekends though), I usually take main roads such as Rte 20 or River Street out of Watertown Square; Belmont out of Cambridge to Beaver Street, or to Trapelo Rd; Comm Ave out to Auburndale and then Lexington St to Moody St in Waltham; or Comm Ave just past Rte 128 to River Rd. Of course if you want to add miles to your heart’s content, you could go way north or south of Waltham and then backtrack. I similarly go way east or west of Norwood and then backtrack. Besides miles, that adds a lot of variety to the ride.
