Feet hurting and going numb

Hello Everyone, I have recently began my journey back into road cycling. At one point I was almost out of the clydesdale club, but school and life in general got in the way and set me back quite a bit. Lately I have been having pretty significant problems with my feet while riding.
My cardio, legs, and ass are not holding me back, but the pain in my feet is the rate-limiting step. I am not having as much trouble with numbness as I have had in the past, but the burning pain is no joke and really preventing me from wanting to ride. I have tried different road shoes mostly shimano SPD-SL and now I am in a nike shoe with a full carbon sole and speed-play lite action pedals. Some have suggested that my shoes may be too narrow and contributing to the pain. Does anyone else have any suggestions?
