Vbrakes "to high"

I'm sure this question has been answered, but I can't find it.

I have an old mid-90's Gary Fisher mountian bike that I'm trying to put Avid single digit 7's on the rear. The brakes fit on the bosses fine, but even with the pads adjusted all the way down, the pads still hit the tire. It seems the bosses are too high. Is there an adapter to fix this problem?

I'm not sure, but i think it had cantilever brakes on the bike before.

I appreciate any help!
