Bar grips: question from my wife.

Guys, my wife Caroline really would like some help with a problem and we can't find the solution in the bike shops.

She suffers from a nerve disorder in her hand (can't remember the name) but she finds that off-road riding tends to make the problem worse and she often has a period of discomfort after each ride. What she'd like to do is to fit much fatter bar grips on her bike, something that has better padding.

We've seen grips that have more rubber on them, but they don't look as if they will do the job. She has the idea of maybe putting some foam padding around the bars and taping that in place, but I'm a bit concerned that it will get in the way of the levers.

When she did road riding, it was seldom a problem, so I think the transition from smooth road to rough track has highlighted the problem. Any ideas what we/she can do?
