having too many spaers makes you liable to break your steerer tube, though. I forget what the number is, but there is an ideal range of spacers. I don't know if steerer tubes actually ever break in reality, but I know i've read that you shouldn't have more than Xmm of spacers...

i'd like to meet someone that could ever break a surly steerer tube....a carbon steerer? yes. you can void the warranty on a cervelo by having more than their recommended spacer stack height (like 25mm) but surly's are a
little different.
