Yes the old chain and cassette are worn together. If the new chain is designed for the number of cogs on the new cassette (6-7 speed probably) they will work properly together. I have no idea what you mean by the chain being thicker. Please try to be more careful about wording if you want helpful responses. Chains have length and width, not "thickness."
