You could probably do it if you wanted to, but I really don't think it would do what you want it to. Once the rain kicks in (which it seems it already has), mud will be flying everywhere. You might keep your own mud off you, but everyone else's mud will still hit you.

I'd say bringing a towel and a change of clothes is the way to go.
