Thanks! You hit the nail on the head. I tried the brake trick and it was indeed loose. I had just given the old bike an overhaul last winter, and I apparently failed to torque the headset down properly. This is the first time I've put any proper miles on it and noticed it. I tightened it up and it's riding great now.
