Sure there's a chance. It COULD be a sign of aging - but I wouldn't bet on it based on my own "can feel it when I place my hand on the side"' experiences with both my knees (yeom 2 surgeries, 3 actually [2 on 1 knee]).
Could be an overuse injury. Could be a tear. Could be a deterioration injury.
