You don't need to remove the chain to check BB tightness. Rotate one arm parallel to chainstay. With one hand on chainstay and other on crankarm, move them apart and together. You can feel any play easily.
That works without pulling the chain off.
Although of course you end up pulling the chain off if you can't find the source of play in order to check more carefully...
