I use a 60 with a 60mm rim and I can just barely screw the end tight. I use an extender to inflate, then remove and close presta end. This way it's secure and won't leak or open unexpectedly.
I'm guessing that with a 52mm rim you may be able to get enough traction on a good floor pump. Hm. Maybe not.
maybe that's my problem,I have one of these!
