AFAIK there is no notification system for visitor messages.
I was going to say "incorrect", but you did say

In the upper right corner of the BF screen you'll see the "Welcome" message. Right next to it is the "Notifications:" pull down menu. Any visitor messages, or PM, or incoming friend requests, and you'll see it in Notifications. The menu changes color when you have unread stuff in there, making it more visible.
