A tire that's too wide won't pop off. That's what happens with a tire that's too narrow. But there is a higher risk of tire sidewall failure and rim sidewall failure with a tire that's too wide. However, 700x34 isn't way out of line for a Open Pro. I'd be completely comfortable running that tire/rim combo.
