On NPR's Prairie Home Companion this weekend a man (? the official weather forecaster) from Embarass, MN was interviewed live on the show about the weather up there. Apparently that town has the unofficial record for lowest temperature, presumably in the continental US (Wikipedia). The announcer asked the guest what are the chances to set the record this year. We will find out soon because the weatherman said that the last week in January and first in February are the coldest of the year, and that's my impression too.

So my point is that while the solstice is celebrated as being a turning point, for illumination, I will start to "see light at the end of the tunnel" for warmer temperatures in about two weeks. For me even December is still not quite "winter."
