skinny drop bars and bar tape?

I have a raleigh reliant bike from the early to mid 70s. The bars are drops but they are really skinny. They measure about 22mm. They fatten up a the point where they clamp to the stem but over all, the whole bar gripping area is 22mm.

They came with the generic plastic bar wrap of the period which has no cushioning. I need to replace it because it is ragged and looks horrible.

That said...what are my options on these bars? I would think the foam wrap might wrap and look strange on these skinny of bars. Should i go cloth? That is what i was thinking. Its probably the most pliable.

ANyone have any experience with these skinner bars? I do believe i have a schwinn traveler of the same period that is in the same boat.
