I've often wondered if some sort of cable splitter could be used and brakes could be put on both the front and back side of the fork. Two brakes, coupled with a longer lever, should improve braking performance.
That being said, I completely rebuilt my R20, using Sun CR18 rims. For the front brake, I used an Avid Single Digit 7 V-brake. I kept the stock rear brake. The V brake is significantly better than the stock rear brake. You can read more about my build
