I always bike commute, 16 miles round trip. But I live in the burbs, where being car free really isn't a viable option. I guess it's possible, but it would have to be a mission, even more than a life style choice.
I can go the whole work week without being in a car, but there's really no way practical out of this burb without driving.
Oh come on, you can do it. I grew up, and began cycling for all my transportation desires, in Pleasant Hill, just over the hill from you. I admit it was often more exciting than I wanted it to be during the rides up to Davis (over the Antioch Bridge), but it is doable.
