I agree with this, and I think most common types of tape will suffer the same fate.

I did do an experiment about a year ago with some clear mylar film (salvaged from packing material designed to protect the front of an LCD in shipping,) and it seems to hold up. It's non-adhesive and a bit slippery, so it was a bit of a pita to get the clamp and mylar positioned correctly.

I think it's working ok, but I probably wouldn't bother to do it again.
