Is it a Sturmey Archer hub? Those are easy to adjust -- the shoulder on the indicator rod should be flush with the end of the axle when the hub is in 2nd gear.
Shimano hubs use a bell crank with an indicator window. Again, with the hub in 2nd gear, adjust the tension so the "N" and/or index line is lined up in the window on the bell crank.
