Newbie to biking but loving it!

Hi there -- I hopped on my dd's Walmart mb about a month and rode for a couple of miles. Realized that it felt WONDERFUL! So I've been riding that bike 4-5 miles at a time since then, 3-4 times/week, mainly for fitness purposes and to clear my head. Now I'm in the market for a hybrid better suited to me... and my own helmet, lol. I want to go farther and faster than I can on her bike. I'm riding mostly country roads with gravel shoulder areas, some hills, and a decent amount of wind. I'm hoping to do some trails (pea gravel?) in a few years when a couple of my kiddos are more up for it.

I've been reading the forums here and I've learned a LOT between that and talking to some guys at the LBS. But I still feel so green... it's hard to know how to go about doing this. I've got mainly Raleigh, Trek, and Specialized readily available. I know this is the place more for intros, but if anyone has anything to say about those brands, go right ahead! I definitely want to stay under $500. Thanks!
