How much to carry is a ways a judgement call and should be based on where you're riding and riders should carry as much as they feel they want to. I'm the master of packing light. Partly based on many years of bicycle touring, and later as a scuba diver where I've gone on multi week trips with all my equipment (except weights and tanks) to areas served by small planes with 35# weight limits. (That leaves me about 12#s for all my non-dive stuff)

BTW- Note I did say to carry boot material. Even in Nevada, you should be able to ride a booted tire to where a replacement could be had, or sent to via express mail. No matter how you slice it you're never more than 24-48 hours from parts availability in the USA. That assumes you have at least one friend at home. If you're a hermit, you might need to carry more.
