I'm 6' 3" and been riding since the 90's. I have only ever known the 26er. There is a ton of good press on 29ers for taller people, but I'm sticking to what I know. I like having a more compact ride, it feels like I have more control. For the price range, I would check out Craigslist bikes. You can get better components and lighter frames if you carefully go over a bike. Compare the asking price on CL with bikepedia.com. I like Scott and Norco for names, but all the bikes in the range you are talking about are welded in pretty much the same 5 factories in China and will have similar SRAM and Shimano components.

BTW-don't take pablosnaz lightly. He lives and works inside the industry and has been know to sprinkle the ashes of arrogant newbies on his COCO Crispys.
