I don't know the answer, but I'm in the same quandary right now. I'm also thinking about the Performance Bike's Holeshot, which is even a little cheaper than the Diamondback. We've test-ridden a Hotrock, but the other two would have to be bought untested and that worries me.
I had looked at your thread, I didn't want to hijack it because I wasn't considering a performance bike, but I am thinking the hotrock is designed as a kids bike that has gears, while the Diamondback is a bmx with gears thrown on. Also, the diamondback can be had for less than $200 on amazon.
