Keep in mind this isn't the pros. In most cases by the time you actually get a wheel the intention behind it is to just get you back to the parking lot.
That's how I've always seen it....
The other thing to bear in mind is if you get dropped from the main group, then your wheel is going for a nice ride around the race route
