Keep in mind this isn't the pros. In most cases by the time you actually get a wheel the intention behind it is to just get you back to the parking lot.
+1. Earlier this year one of my friends was in the break with me (prob 2-3 minutes up the road), he flats out, wheel turns out to be behind the main field. He as a result has to chase the peloton for 8 miles or so and finally just said screw it.
