The key is to get enough torque to break it loose and tighten it properly. With a 2x4, the wood is soft enough and won't damage the mount hardware & finish on the shock absorber.
You can easily open it up by hand. It it is enough to damage your frame mounts, that's probably a pretty weak frame.
