On my first century attempt (at age 46) my left knee locked up on me about around mile 53 & I was SAG'd back in. I had to walk stiff-legged for a day (hurt bad, too). Stayed off the bike a few weeks. Went on a short ride - issue returned within 10 miles.
Solution: I started taking daily doses of gelatin (a fellow rider's suggestion) - yes, you can buy powdered Knox gelatin in a big ol' can in your xmart's supplement aisle. I took it for about 6 weeks before I made any attempt at serious riding. I continued with "maintenance" doses for about a year. My knee has never locked up on me again. It's been 7 years. I've been through multiple bikes & saddles, and therefore saddle positions, in the meantime. Anytime I start to feel anything in either knee, which is maybe once a year, I'll take the gelatin for a few days. I also take MSM and flax oil on pretty much a daily basis. No, I've never seen a doctor for this.
