Photos would be a big help.

On the Schwinn, look closely at the head badge for four small, lightly stamped digits. They represent the assembly date. The first three digits are the day of the year (001-366), and the last digit is the last digit of the year (8 could be 1978 or 1988 for example - the decals and components would tell the decade).

"Chicago" on the head badge doesn't mean the bike was built there as the Chicago factory closed in 1983. Schwinn's headquarters remained in Chicago until the late 1992 bankruptcy, so the "Chicago" on the head badge represents the HQ location of the company, not where the bike was made.
