Front or Rear wheel drive?

I searched and could not find a specific thread on this. Just a few bits here and there as related to breaking spokes and deceiving other cyclists by hiding your motor under bags...
For those of you with experience, do you recommend front or rear wheel drive please? It will be for my Sun Cargo long tail. It will include winter riding with ice patches and slush here in metro Detroit. With and without a load of groceries, yard sale junk, parts or the occasional bike in tow (fork clamped to rear rack and rear wheel trailing on the ground behind me.
Thanks!
