"An" is famously difficult for Americans. We're all taught in elementary school to use "an" before a vowel and "a" otherwise. That's correct, but limited. The post explains it. I actually initially thought "an technically" might be correct, but it seems you were right. I wasn't so much schooling or high-fiving you as saying, "dang, this is more complex than it seems!"
