Oxygen atoms absorb the higher frequency blue light more readily than lower frequency light including red, yellow, green. As this absorbed light is later released-it is radiated as blue light in a multitude of directions giving disparate point sources of scatterred blue re-radiated light. In contrast, the unabsorbed red light continues on in a more or less straight direction.
