The wrapping is something I learned in the Navy, I'll probably do a thin tape wrap under it. I know it will look nice but it may turn out to be uncomfortable, if it is I'll go back to a regular wrap
This is one of those things that if I saw it on a bike, I would completely understand, particularly when you say you are a sailor (please notice I didn't use the term "Squid"). Just the skill involved in doing that, gives it merit in my opinion. I say totally worth a try.
