The Easy-Off I know about is oven cleaner; it is a strong alkali and will attack the aluminum parts of the shifters. Don't do it, stick with WD-40 or a light aerosol white grease which contains some solvent as well as lubricant. The idea is to loosen and soften the grease inside, not to wash it out.
