Considering the reputation of some their products (I'm thinking air pumps), I'm surprised they'd sell such a poor product (based onsome of the reviews I've read).

I am assuming they sold the branding rights...

Kind of like an LBS Scwhinn and a WM Schwinn they both come with wheels and a chain.

Not at all uncommon today. I have seen it on a wide variety of products from steam irons to lawnmowers to chainsaws. Big national (or even international) retail chains have an item made for them that meets their specifications so they can advertise it at a lower price than the regular model product. It pays to check the manufacturer's website and see if the item is listed. I ran into this with a chainsaw from Lowe's, it was not on the manufacturer website. Local dealer didn't want to work on it, take it back to Lowe's for a refund.

As a side note read the story of Snapper lawnmower and WM.
