Tiagra Brifters, what can I expect

finally got a modern road bike with brifters and really enjoying them. what a pleasure not having to shift body position/weight to tangle with my down tube levers. makes being in the perfect gear at all times a reality.

but I know that these are not top of the line so what makes them inferior? as I use them are there any indications of wear to be observant for? do they have any limitations, as in "they're great so long as you don't ..."

I'm not easy on equipment of any kind and i'm used to bulletproof '70s-'80s era steel bikes.
