Yes, I have done this recently on a 70s/80s (?) Raleigh that is now my regular commuter. Measured up the BB shell length and diameter; spoke with some helpful people at SJS cycles (UK shop); ordered a Shimano sealed BB in the correct size; removed old cottered cranks, BB shells, bearings etc.; cleaned and greased threads and screwed in the new sealed unit using a Shimano BB tool. The tricky part for me was getting the right spindle width as I was converting from 5 speed deraullier gears to Nexus 4 speed hub so had to take care to get the right chainline; everything is working fine and haven't had any problems in almost 1000 miles.
